Daily Devotional - Discipleship - WK34 - 08/20/24 - Day 212 “Healing in Joppa"

Author: Evangelist Lisa Dalton
"Healing in Joppa"
Scripture: Acts 9:36-42 (NKJV)

"At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did. But it happened in those days that she became sick and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. And since Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them. Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them. But Peter put them all out and knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. Then he gave her his hand and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed on the Lord."

Devotion:
This passage introduces us to Tabitha (also known as Dorcas), a remarkable disciple known for her acts of kindness and generosity. Her life was so impactful that when she died, the entire community mourned deeply, and God used her resurrection to bring many to faith. Tabitha’s story reminds us that the legacy we leave behind is built on how we love and serve others. What a life!

Tabitha’s life was characterized by "always doing good and helping the poor." She used her skills and resources to bless others, particularly those in need. This speaks to the importance of living a life of service. Our faith should naturally lead to acts of kindness, as we seek to embody Christ’s love in practical ways. Reflect on how you can serve those around you, using your unique gifts and resources.

When Tabitha died, the community’s response was one of deep sorrow, showing how much she was loved and valued. This reminds me of how my small-town community came together to celebrate my father. A man of service and respected by all. When Tabitha died, the Christian community called for Peter, hoping for a miracle, which demonstrates their faith and the strong bonds within the Christian community. This passage reminds us of the importance of being connected to a community of believers who support and uplift one another in times of need.

Peter’s prayer and Tabitha’s subsequent resurrection reveal God’s power to bring life out of death. This miracle led many to believe in the Lord. It is a reminder that God can use even the darkest moments for His glory and to bring others to faith. In our own lives, we can trust that God is at work, even in difficult circumstances, and that He can use our testimonies to draw others to Himself.

Application:

Serve with Purpose: Consider how you can use your talents and resources to serve others, just as Tabitha did. Whether it is through acts of kindness, volunteering, or simply being present for someone in need, small acts of service can have a lasting impact.

Value Your Community:
Reflect on the importance of being connected to a community of believers. How can you strengthen those connections? Through prayer, support, or simply spending time with others, you can be a source of encouragement and strength.

Trust in God’s Power: Remember that God is always at work, even when situations seem hopeless. Trust Him to bring about good in your life and to use your story for His glory.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the example of Tabitha, who lived a life full of good works and compassion. Help us to follow in her footsteps, serving others with joy and trusting in Your power to bring life and hope in every situation. May our lives reflect Your love and draw others to You. Amen.
