History of the Church

Established..1970 ~ Our Beginning..1971
The Historic Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ (circa 1972)

Bishop J. Howard Sherman, Sr.
A Gifted Man of God

Establishing and organizing a COGIC church in Charlotte, North Carolina in the early 1970’s was a brave and daunting undertaking. Charlotte, known as a “Baptist town”, welcomed Bishop Sherman and the Church of God in Christ to unchartered territory for our denomination. His “mountain moving faith”, powerful Gospel preaching, gifts of healing and deliverance, and charming persona ushered in a new brand of worship.
During his lifetime, Bishop Sherman also made impacts in local, state and national politics and community activism through his personal style of letting his actions speak louder than his words. Regardless, of race, gender, ethnicity or political affiliation, Bishop Sherman felt that he could “reason with you” and “make some things happen for the People of God”.
Many souls were saved and delivered during his 25-year ministry in Charlotte.

OUR HISTORY Continues…

At Bishop Sherman’s passing in 1996, Bishop C. Ellis Anderson, Sr. was appointed Jurisdictional Prelate of North Carolina – Second Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction and pastor of Pentecostal Temple.
That same year, Bishop Anderson changed the church’s name to Sherman Memorial,
in honor of the founder, Bishop J. Howard Sherman, Sr.
Bishop Anderson was an anointed gospel preacher, who believed that preaching “destroys the yoke” and as such made a commitment to preach EVERY service. Whether Bible Study, Sunday evening or business meeting, we were always guaranteed “Bread for Our Journey”.
Bishop C. E. Anderson, Sr. 1996 - 2012
Immediate Successor to the Founder 1996 - 2012
Bishop C. E., Sr. & Mother Barbara Ann Anderson Mother Anderson remains a staunch supporter, Prayer Partner & Wise Counselor of Sherman Memorial
Bishop C. E., Jr. & Lady Rosalyn Anderson 2012 - 2014
Pastor Demetrius K., Sr. & Lady Catherine Samu-el Senior Pastor - 2015 ~
Through Bishop Anderson’s leadership, Sherman Memorial’s membership grew exponentially. Many pastors and new ministries were birthed out of Sherman Memorial. Sherman had the reputation of a “mighty oak from which other congregations grew”. At last count, over 22 ministries got their start at Sherman Memorial. What a legacy!
In its, 50 year history, Historic Sherman Memorial has only had 4 pastors: Founder & Establishmentarian, the Late Bishop J. Howard Sherman, Sr., the Late Bishop C. E. Anderson, Sr., and Bishop C. E. Anderson, Jr.
We are blessed to have a “son of Sherman” to serve as Pastor, now, Superintendent Demetrius K. Samu-el, Sr.
Historic Sherman Memorial is “going somewhere”, as proclaimed by Superintendent Samu-el, supported by our membership and manifested by the Holy Spirit.
