"Leaders Make Leaders"
Scripture: Exodus 18:24-25

"So Moses heeded the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. 25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens."

Devotion:
In this passage, Moses, the leader of Israel, takes wise counsel from his father-in-law, Jethro. Moses had been trying to manage all the leadership responsibilities and disputes among the people by himself, which was exhausting and unsustainable. Jethro advised him to delegate these responsibilities by appointing capable leaders to help him manage the people's needs. Moses humbly accepted this advice, and as a result, the burden of leadership was shared, making it more effective and sustainable.

Moses, though a great leader, was humble enough to listen to Jethro’s advice. This teaches us the importance of being open to guidance from others, especially those who have our best interests at heart. It’s a reminder that we don’t have to carry our burdens alone, and that seeking advice from others can lead to better decisions and outcomes.

Moses chose capable men to share the leadership responsibilities, appointing them as leaders over separate groups. Delegation is not about giving up responsibility, but about empowering others to use their gifts and talents. This not only lightened Moses’ load, but also strengthened the community by involving more people in leadership and decision-making. It shows us the value of teamwork and the importance of trusting others to take on significant roles.

By delegating, Moses ensured that leadership was shared among many, creating a more organized and effective structure. This built a stronger community where leaders were closer to the people they served, making justice more accessible and governance more responsive. In our own lives, whether in church, work, or family, shared leadership fosters a sense of community and collaboration, ensuring that no one is overwhelmed and that everyone has a role to play.

Application:
Seek and Heed Wise Counsel: Reflect on areas in your life where you might be trying to manage too much on your own. Who are the wise counselors in your life that you can turn to for advice? Be open to listening and acting on their counsel.

Practice Delegation: Identify tasks or responsibilities that you can delegate to others, whether at work, home, or in ministry. Trust others to take on these roles and empower them to succeed. Recognize that delegation can lead to more effective and sustainable leadership.

Foster Teamwork and Shared Leadership: Consider how you can encourage a culture of shared leadership in your community. How can you involve others more in decision-making and responsibilities? This not only eases your burden but also helps others grow in their gifts and leadership.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the example of Moses and his willingness to listen and delegate. Help us to follow his example by seeking wise counsel, delegating responsibilities, and fostering teamwork. May we work together to serve You and build strong, supportive communities. Amen.
