“Two are Better than One”
Scripture: Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NIV

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

Devotion:
Being independent in this world is looked at as a strength, especially in this present time. People, including me, at times pride themselves on saying, “I did this by myself!” “I didn’t need anyone to obtain this or that.” And honestly, it is a great feeling, but what does the Bible say about this? When we examine Scripture, even from the beginning in Genesis with Adam, God stated that it was not good for man to be alone; and he sent Adam a help mate, which was Eve. As we continue through the Scriptures, we also see in Psalm 133, where it tells us how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.

Though God may encourage us to dwell together and depend on each other, some of us may have the question, why? Why do I have to fellowship and be around people? Some of us may feel it’s safer to stay to ourselves and not be around people because of previous disappointment or lack of trust.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 breaks down the importance of unity and leaning on each other. It explains why two are indeed better than one, and if one falls, the other can lift them up. If one were to fall alone, who will be there to lift them up? It also explains how there is strength in numbers. Yes, we may be strong independently, but if we get with LIKE-MINDED people, what we will realize is, we do not have to carry every load by ourselves. We can strengthen and lean on each other so that when the enemy tries to come to steal, kill, and destroy, it will be even harder to break us because the Scripture states in verse 12, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Let’s continue to ask God to strengthen us individually so that we can continue to come together, witness to others, and draw them to Christ. We also need Him to place love, kindness, and forgiveness in our hearts so that we will continue to spread those very characteristics on to our fellow brothers and sisters.

Prayer:
God we thank You for Your word. We thank You for showing us the importance of unity and that where there is unity, there is strength. God we ask that You help us to lean on You first and foremost, but also, encourage us to lean on and be there for each other as well. Help us not to be selfish and want to do things by ourselves for self-praise or for the boost of our egos. God we thank You for all things, and we will forever continue to worship and draw closer to You. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
