Daily Devotional - Make Room - WK5 - 1/27/25 - Day 27 - "Returning the Lord with a Repentant Heart"
Author: Elder Jay Wells
“Returning to the Lord with a Repentant Heart”
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 30:9 (KJV)
“For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find compassion before them that lead them captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the Lord your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him.”
Devotion:
Now that we have discussed the importance of forgiveness, we will discuss the principle of “repentance.” The verse in today’s lesson is part of a powerful story of repentance, restoration, and God’s grace. In the text, King Hezekiah is speaking during his efforts to lead the people of Judah and Israel back to true worship. These words reflect a timeless truth: no matter how far we have strayed, God’s arms are open to us if we turn back to Him. His grace and compassion are unfailing.
In 2 Chronicles 30, King Hezekiah is calling the people to celebrate the Passover, which had been neglected during years of idolatry and rebellion. He sends messengers throughout Judah and the northern kingdom of Israel, urging the people to return to the Lord. Just like today, a lot of them mocked the messengers, but some humbled themselves and responded to the call. The invitation carried a promise that God, in His compassion, would welcome them back and restore what was lost.
This scripture is a beautiful picture of God’s heart. It reveals His character as gracious and compassionate, ready to forgive and restore. God’s compassion does not depend on our worthiness but on His unchanging love. Hezekiah reminds us that returning to God is always met with mercy, not condemnation.
Saints, it’s important to remember, no matter how far we have wandered, God’s grace is sufficient to cover our sins. Whenever we turn back to God, He will restore what was broken and often the blessings we lost in the process. Our return to God can also have ripple effects on those around us.
Today, let’s do a personal inventory. Are there areas of your life where you’ve strayed from God? If so, we can take time to reflect and repent. Don’t let shame or guilt keep you from returning to God.
Remember, His face is turned toward you in love. Just like Hezekiah sent out invitations, you can encourage others to experience God’s grace through your words and actions.
As I close, take a moment, and think what might God be calling you to return to today? Maybe it’s a deeper prayer life, a community of believers, or obedience in an area you’ve neglected. Whatever it is, be encouraged and know that God is waiting with open arms. God’s compassion is greater than your failures. Return to Him, and you’ll find forgiveness and restoration.
Prayer:
Most kind gracious Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing love. Thank You for the promise that if I return to You, You will never turn Your face away. Search my heart and show me where I need to turn back to You. Restore me and use my life to encourage others to experience Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
