 All Grown Up Now

                                         Heb. 8:13                                             
13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. (NKJV)

Devotion:
Raising children can be a challenge as they get older. When we were toddlers there were certain rules, we had to live by. We couldn’t play outside alone, we weren’t allowed to walk across the street alone, and we were sent to bed by 8 pm. As we grew a little older the rules changed. Now as preteens, we are given the liberty to stay up a little later, say 10 pm. We played outside until dust dark. We were even given the liberty to talk on the phone, (prehistoric home phones). Then as young adults, the laws changed again, giving us full liberty to spread our wings and become law-abiding citizens. Our parents were only there for us as advisors or as the ones who gave or enforced the rules.

That’s what happened when Jesus died on the cross for us. His death changed the rules for us. In this scripture, the writer talks to us about the new covenant that was made from Jesus’ death and resurrection. Prior to verse 13, He says, if the first covenant had been faultless, then there would not have been a reason to look for a second one. The Lord found fault with the first laws because the people could not keep them, which meant the relationship between Him and His people would never be restored. He goes on to say that no longer would He use the law He made with Moses in the days of old when He had to lead them out of Egypt, but this new covenant would be on their minds and written on their hearts. He would be their God and they would be His people. Not only that, but He also said the lawless deed He would remember no more, and He would have mercy on their unrighteousness. After hearing that, who would want to go back to the days of being a toddler? I certainly don’t. 5020202020Recent
