“Exceeding Joy”
Scripture: Matthew 2:10, KJV
 
“When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.”

Devotion:
There is a joy that goes beyond this world and all its passing pleasures, a joy that as people say “passes all understanding”. I am talking about the joy of the Lord. In today’s Scripture, the wise men were searching for something big. They had heard the news of the baby being born in Bethlehem and were on their way. They did not know where it was going to take them or how long the journey would be; however, the Bible said when they saw the star, they were rejoicing with exceeding joy. Now, how many of us are told to go on a journey, not knowing the length, or where we are going on a promise of something great and are rejoicing. Not too many. Some people know where they are going, how long it’s going to take to get there, and that they will have great fun when they arrive, and are still grumpy. “Are we there yet?” and “How much longer?” are some questions often asked. There is often little rejoicing.

The wise men are here to teach us a lesson. Joy is not based on great circumstances, it’s not based upon our luxury, it is based upon the good news of Jesus Christ. The wise men were led to the right place, at the right time, and they were found doing the right thing. When we keep our eyes on Jesus, when we seek to find Him, He will give us the exceeding joy that no one can take away from us. Rejoice with the joy of the Lord simply because He is alive and near.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the joy that only You can give. Help me to appreciate this joy and to share the good news with others so they too can experience You in your majesty. In Jesus name, Amen.
