Wisdom in a Book

Job 28:28
8 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding. (KJV)

Devotional
There’s this saying, “when you know better, you do better.” One would hope that’s true as often as we question the decisions people make. If they were wise, they would not have done such and such a thing. I can look back over my life and see where I knew better but didn’t do better. Like the time I played hooky from school to hang out with my friends. I knew better, but I didn’t do better. Or the time when I spent my bill money at the mall instead of paying my bills. I knew better, but I didn’t do better. Oh well, let’s talk about the time I decided to ignore all the signs of that unhealthy relationship. I knew better but didn’t do better. What does this all have to do with wisdom? Well, if wisdom is the ability to use knowledge, experience, and understanding to make good decisions and judgments, and to act productively, I should have never gotten myself into those bad decisions. A wise person learns from other’s mistakes. Well, I’ve watched many people make bad decisions all in the name of wisdom.

In this scripture, the writer is saying that the way to wisdom is through our fear of The Lord. Not in as being afraid of The Lord but reverencing His deity. Knowing and understanding who He is and what part He plays in our lives. When we know and understand who The Lord is, we can depart from evil. Just like the saying, “when you know better, you do better.” When we seek The Lord in all things, read His word for guidance, harken to His voice when He speaks, understand what He’s saying, we can walk away from a lot of heartaches and pains.

As you go throughout your day today, let wisdom be your guide. Let the word of God be your guide. If you do not have wisdom, ask of Him, which He gives liberally to all people. James 1:5 He will not be mad at you for asking. Trust me, He loves it when we depend on Him.

Prayer:
Lord, I thank You for making wisdom available to me. It is my desire to always do good and avoid evil situations. Today, I will study Your word for more wisdom so I can continue making better decisions that will keep me from evil. In Jesus' name, Amen.
