“Breaking Sin’s Authority”
Scripture: Romans 6:14

"For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace."

Devotion:
Paul doesn’t say in this verse that sin might not rule over you, he says it shall not. Sin’s authority over us has been broken because of Christ. Before salvation, sin had power over us. It influenced our choices, shaped our desires, and pulled us in directions away from God. But when we came to Christ, something should have changed.

We must remember that just because we are under grace, it does not mean we live carelessly. It means we live empowered by Christ, because grace does not excuse sin; it breaks sin’s control. God’s grace teaches us, strengthens us, and reminds us that we belong to a new Master.

We may still feel temptation, and we may still struggle. But because we are saved, the struggle that we feel should be different because we have been set free from sin. Sin no longer has legal authority over our lives. Romans 6:17-18 NLT says, "Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you. Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living."

Therefore, when temptation whispers in your ear, remember that you are ruled by God’s grace, and must walk in the freedom Christ has already given you.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for the promise in Your Word that sin shall not have authority over us, because we are not under law but under grace. Thank You for the freedom You have given us from the power of sin. Help us to walk each day in the victory You have already provided. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
