“The Wisdom of Peace”
Scripture: Proverbs 29:11, NIV
 
“Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end.”
 
Devotion:
Self-control (temperance) is the ninth and last fruit of the spirit, and it is necessary if we are going to be effective witnesses for Christ. Emotions are a natural part of being human, but being controlled by our emotions can cause us to act out of character. Today’s Scripture lets us know fools act out in rage, but the wise person is one who can bring calm to any situation. Emotional maturity is being able to control yourself and think before you act. Emotional immaturity is not controlling your words or actions and “matching energy,” as the young people say.

The Word of God lets us know in James 1:19-20 that we should be “swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath. For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” When we give in to anger and act irrationally, we are not showing the true character of Christ. There were many times Jesus could have justifiably acted out in rage, especially with those self-righteous Pharisees, instead He responded with the Word of God and patience. Imagine the self-control our Savior had to have, and we lose it over a mere look that’s out of place. We should follow Christ's example when facing frustrating, irritating, and upsetting challenges or people. We can’t respond like the world responds.

Prayer:
Lord, help us! Help us have the fruit of self-control. Don’t allow us to let anger or rage overtake us. Help us reflect Your love in all that we say and do and be a living example for someone else to receive the gift of salvation. Amen.
