"The Heart Matters Most"
Scripture: Proverbs 21:2
 
"Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts."

Devotion:
How often do we try to convince ourselves that certain actions that we take are appropriate, but deep down inside, or in our heart, we feel uneasy or question whether we could have reacted another way?  We may tell ourselves that we acted with the best intentions because it felt right to us. “That made me feel good.”  But this verse in Proverbs reminds us that God sees deeper, He examines our hearts – our true motives, desires and attitudes.  It also reminds us that it is not enough to feel right about our actions, because God wants us to perform with a sincere heart. Our hearts are in the hands of the Lord as mentioned in the previous verse, Proverbs 21:1, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.”  This lets us know that we do not have absolute power over our lives, only God does, therefore we must approach life differently.  Instead of us relying on our own understanding or judgment about the matter, we have to seek wisdom from the Lord and let His Word shape our thinking and actions.
 
Prayer:  
Lord please search our hearts and show us anything that is in us that does not line up to Your will.  Help us not to lean to our own understanding, but to walk in humility, being guided by Your wisdom and Your grace.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen
