“A Contrite Heart”
Scripture: Psalm 51:17

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”

Devotion:
King David offers a heartfelt prayer of repentance after his sin. God desires not external sacrifices, but a heart that is truly broken and contrite. A "contrite heart" is one that is humble, repentant, and deeply aware of its brokenness before God. It’s not just feeling sorry for our sins, but being genuinely moved by the reality of how our actions have grieved God. David’s words should remind us that God is not interested in mere outward acts of worship or ritualistic sacrifices when our hearts are far from Him. He desires true repentance that comes from the depths of our being.

A contrite heart also leads to change. True repentance is not just about feeling remorse; it is a desire to turn away from sin and live in a way that honors God. When we acknowledge our need for His mercy, we open ourselves to transformation. A contrite heart is not condemned, but rather, it is one that God can shape and use for His purposes. A contrite heart is not a sign of weakness but of strength in surrender. When we come to God in humility, He meets us with His love, forgiveness, and transforming power. Let us continue to seek a heart that is broken before Him, for it is there that His grace can do its greatest work.

Prayer:
Father, I come to You with a broken and contrite heart. I confess the ways I have sinned and fallen short of Your glory. I ask for Your forgiveness and healing. Help me to turn away from my sin and to walk in obedience to You. Thank You that You do not despise a humble heart but that You welcome me with grace and love. Restore me, O God, and create in me a clean heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
