Day 9 Thursday 3/13 - This Kind

Scriptural Reflection

And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. - St. Mark 9:29

Devotional Thought
St. Mark 9 opens up with the scene of Jesus during a time of deep consecration. After six days he pulls in Peter, James and John as witnesses of His transfiguration. Immediately following Jesus’ transfiguration He meets the challenge of coming down from this high mountain to a great multitude questioning His disciples. He jumped to their defense right away asking the crowd why they were questioning His disciples. To the disciples chagrin He got an answer! His disciples  were attempting to do what they saw Him doing without doing what it took to be prepared to do what Jesus was doing. Look, here is the Son of God who came into the earth, humbled Himself to experience humanity as a man and  shows His disciples how important it was to pray to the Father. No one receives power except it comes from God. In order to get that power it requires relationship.

A hopeful citizen brought his son to where he heard Jesus was in hopes of getting help. When he got there he encountered Jesus’ representatives. His assumption was “since I can’t get directly to Jesus, those who boast of being with him should suffice.” Wrong! These were not ready. They were not ready because they had not done “the work” to be ready. Gracefully, Jesus saved the day. In the aftermath His disciples, bewildered asked why could they not do what Jesus did. He tells them this kind can only happen as a result of the right sacrifice.

Prayer
Father thank You for giving me the desire seek You for more. Quench my thirst for a deeper consecration for a heavier anointing.  In Jesus’ name. Amen.
