“Have Mercy”
Scripture: Matthew 9:13

“But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Devotion:
In this powerful verse, Jesus speaks to the Pharisees who were questioning Him for associating with sinners. At first glance, it might seem like sacrifice should be the highest form of worship, but Jesus dismisses it. What God desires most is not outward ritual or sacrifice, but mercy—a heart that is compassionate, forgiving, and full of grace. Some people follow the law to the letter, more focused on people seeing their outward actions. But Jesus shows us that the heart behind our actions matters far more than the actions themselves. It’s not about checking the box or being righteous; but about reflecting God’s heart of mercy—showing kindness, compassion, and forgiveness to those who are struggling, lost, and in need.

Mercy goes beyond the mere act of giving; it’s about looking beyond someone's faults and seeing them as Jesus does—worthy of love and redemption. God, in His mercy, extends grace to sinners, calling them to Himself, not because of their righteousness, but because of His love. God is calling us to something deeper: a heart that beats with mercy. Mercy transforms us. It turns a heart focused on judgment into one of love and grace. May we be people who reflect God’s mercy to the world around us.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your incredible mercy toward me. I don’t deserve Your grace, but You extend it freely. Help me to show that same mercy to others, especially those who may not seem worthy in my eyes. May my heart reflect Your love and compassion, and may I always prioritize mercy over sacrifice. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
