Daily Devotional - Terms of Agreement - WK9 - 2/26/25 - Day 57 - "Seek Peace"

“Seek Peace”
Scripture: Romans 14:19 KJV
 
“Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.”

Devotion:
On a typical day, did you know that 80% of our thoughts are negative? Well, at least that is what Google reports. However, based on experience, I would say it is a somewhat accurate percentage. Negativity and lies constantly try to bombard our minds, and we must counteract them with God's Word. That is why we must renew our minds daily and cast down negativity daily.
           
In today’s scripture, Paul is letting the saints know they must pursue peace with one another and build each other up. Because of this flesh, sometimes it is easy to criticize and find fault in others. However, God wants us to extend grace, build up, encourage and love our brothers and sisters, not tear them down, gossip about, or ostracize them. Our prayers and kindness can go further than our judgement and condemnation.
           
The reality is people need people. God created us that way. We don’t exist in a bubble all by ourselves. With people united together, you’re going to have different personalities, opinions, and ideas. With that can sometimes come conflicts. How do we handle conflict or issues in the church? Do we take them to God in prayer and seek His guidance? Do we seek peace? Do we show love?

One thing that I have asked God to do for me, both professionally and personally, is to help me not be so easily offended by people. I want to be emotionally mature enough to know that sometimes that harsh word or negativity is not because of anything I have done. It’s based on what the individual is internally struggling with and deflecting back on me. So instead of me responding or acting out of character, I should pray for them and also seek God’s guidance on how to approach the situation in love.

Jesus showed us the great example of how to walk in peace with others. He faced constant negativity, yet instead of quitting or fighting back, He responded directly and graciously with God's Word. He was confident in who He was and the purpose God had for Him. Even when He was hanging on the cross, His love was so great, He said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” What a great example of seeking peace and showing unconditional love!

Prayer:
Lord, help us seek peace with our brothers and our sisters. Help us follow the example set by Jesus of love, grace, and compassion. Amen.
