“A Joyous Encounter”
Scripture: Luke 1:39-42 ESV

“In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”

Devotion:
As we go through life, we encounter people. Sometimes they bring good to our lives, and other times, not so good. We learn through those encounters who these people really are and how they fit into our everyday life, or at least we try to learn. There are those people who make a lasting impression with us based on the encounters we have with them. They are the catalyst for change in our lives. In my experiences, every encounter with these individuals is a joyous one, because regardless of what is going on with me, they always have a way to play a part in a wonderful change in my life. The same is true for the text. Mary was just going to visit her cousin, not realizing that she would be the catalyst for Elizabeth in receiving the Holy Spirit. The amazing thing is that Elizabeth recognized the change in her life and acknowledged who brought about it, her dear cousin Mary. She knew that Mary was blessed and was able to receive the ultimate blessing from God because of it. Now that’s a cause to celebrate! May we be like Elizabeth and recognize the joyous encounters we have with those who help us change for the better!

Prayer:
God, we thank You for the many blessings that You send our way. The way You place people into our lives is nothing short of amazing. Lord, we ask that You continue to give us wisdom to know, recognize, and acknowledge those people who bring about joyous encounters in our lives, just as Mary did with Elizabeth. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
