“Be Qualified”
Scripture: 1 Timothy 3:2

“A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;”

Devotion:
To be qualified means that a person is fitted for a given purpose. This scripture lists several qualifications that apply to what the Bible calls a Bishop. It can also apply to an Elder or Overseer. We shall break down these qualities one by one. First of all, the Bible says that a Bishop must be blameless. Blameless speaks to the character of the person and means without accusation. As leaders, we must have above board reputations. That is not to say that leaders will never make mistakes, but the presumption is that their leader’s character is stellar.

The next qualification is self-explanatory. One man = one wife. Nothing else needs to be said. Up next is being vigilant. The word vigilant means to always be careful or alert. Leaders are always the targets of the enemy, so they must remain watchful. Praying and fasting always to stay ready keeps the leader vigilant. Sober and of good behaviour are also self-explanatory. Being sober minded will produce good behavior. Thinking clearly and being able to hear the voice of God will always allow the leader to make good decisions and lead well. Leaders must also be hospitable and ever learners to be able to teach God’s people.

Leaders must have all types of qualities. The above list is only a handful of qualities for one type of leader. Leadership qualities must be developed daily. No leader has all the answers, but being qualified means knowing you are built for this and walking in the purpose given by God.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for qualifying me for such a time as this. Thank You for the opportunity to lead and thank You for equipping me also. Help me to realize that this is my time and give me the strength to continue in the purpose You have set for me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
