“Perfect Love”
Scripture: 1 John 4:17

“Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.”

Devotion:
What is perfect love? I’m so glad you asked. Perfect love is demonstrated in Romans 5:8, where it says, "But God shows his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (NIV) Think about it, God didn't wait until we had everything together and we presented ourselves holy before Him. He knew we were going to need to be redeemed, and He made provision for us even when we didn’t have the sense enough to know we needed it. He literally took me when I was a hot mess, saved me by His grace and mercy, and He cleansed me from the inside out. That’s enough to make me want to shout right there.

In today’s scripture, John lets the people know that to operate in perfect love and boldness, they must love like God loves. Every so often, a heart check is necessary. Did I speak life? Did I respond with kindness? What’s my love level today? Am I operating from a place of love or based on how someone treats me? Am I loving the way God wants me to love?

True Godly love is the most powerful evidence of being “born again” as a child of God. We can shout, dance, pray, preach, and teach, but if we don’t have the love of God in our hearts, we might as well go sit down somewhere. Perfect love is God, and it comes from God. He loved us before we even knew who He was. When we live in obedience to God, according to love, we can be confident in our relationship with Him. God’s love is amazing!
