Dig A Little Deeper

Scripture: John 1:26-28 NLT
"26John told them, “I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. 27 Though his ministry follows mine, I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal.” 28 This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing."

Devotion
In verse 26, John baptized with water which was a temporary symbol of the true, abiding, and effectual baptism of the One who would baptize with the Holy Spirit. John also points to their ignorance; Christ was in their very midst, and they did not know it. Verse 27 tells us that the Messiah was already there and they didn’t know.  John let them know that he was not Him. Even though He is coming after me, He is the all existent One who was before and will be eternally after me.  By John comparing himself to Christ, he said, he is not worthy to unloose the latchet of His shoe.

In verse 28 John was baptizing probably in an area that was not far from Jericho. My prayer is that the new believers receive that water baptism as their demonstration to a new life, committing themselves and their souls to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Also, to “keep on digging deeper”, as my Pastor would say; to know more and to hunger for the Holy Spirit to lead and guide them to the truth of living a Holy and righteous life.  It doesn’t end with being baptized, it’s just the beginning to developing a lifestyle that is pleasing unto the Lord.

Prayer:
Father God, thank You for Your saving power and the water that cleanses us. Help us to continue to dig deeper in You and I know that You will fill me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
