Devotion: Trust in God’s Plan

Scripture John 16:7: “But very I tell you the truthly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”

Reflection: In John 16:7, Jesus speaks to His disciples about His impending departure. This statement comes during His farewell discourse, a time filled with heavy emotions as the disciples grapple with the reality of Jesus leaving them. Jesus assures them that His departure is actually for their benefit, because it will lead to the coming of the Advocate, the Holy Spirit. The disciples couldn’t comprehend how losing Jesus could be advantageous. After all, He was their teacher, leader, and friend. Yet, Jesus emphasizes that the Holy Spirit’s coming would bring them even closer to God, empowering them in ways they had not yet experienced.

Understanding the Advocate: The term “Advocate”; (Parakletos in Greek) means one who comes alongside to help. The Holy Spirit is described as a comforter, counselor, and helper. The Spirits presence within believers would provide continuous guidance, wisdom, and strength. While Jesus walked alongside the disciples, the Holy Spirit would dwell within them, providing an ever-present source of divine connection and empowerment.

This passage invites us to trust in God’s plan, even when it doesn’t align with our understanding. Sometimes, what seems like a loss, or a step backward is a part of God’s greater purpose for our growth and blessing. Just as the disciples had to let go of Jesus in His physical form to receive the Spirit, we too must be open to the changes God brings into our lives, trusting that His plans are for our ultimate good.

Thought for the Day: When faced with change or loss, remember that God may be making way for an even greater blessing in your life. Trust in His divine plan and lean on the Holy Spirit for guidance and strength.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Help us to trust Your plans, even when they are hard to understand. May we be open to the guidance and comfort of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives. Teach us to rely on Your presence within us, knowing that You are always working for our good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
