“The Oil”

Exodus 25:6
“Oil for the light, spices for anointing oil, and for sweet incense,”

Devotional:
Reading this scripture takes me back to the days when my grandmother would use oil to light the house when the lights went out. There was always a small oil light with a long string of wick sitting in it, always ready to light. The light was very subtle but strong enough for us to see our way. I’m not sure if it was olive oil or kerosene, but that lamp helped us through many stormy nights. That’s what the oil of The Lord does for us. It helps us get through some tough moments when the storms come.

And who doesn’t love a nice perfume? Perfumes are used to add a sweet fragrance to a person’s body or room. Not because there is a bad odor, but just to add a little extra to their appearance or freshness to a room. Some fragrances are strong, some are subtle. Some are flowery and some are spicy. Some people can handle it, and some can’t. But there is one fragrance that everyone can handle and that’s the sweet incense that’s used in the anointing oil.

The oil is used to anoint a person when they are ready to go out into the highways and the byways to preach the gospel. The oil is used to anoint people when they’re being prayed for. The oil is used on our bodies when we are believing God for healing and deliverance. We use the oil as a symbol of God’s anointing. God’s power is not in the oil. The power is in the belief of God’s anointing that the oil represents.

Now that we have experienced the Day of Pentecost, let us take the light and wear the anointing of God where we go, so others can see that light and smell God’s incense that flows through our souls.

Prayer:
Lord thank You for the gifts of the olive oil which is used to give us light, healing, and direction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
