Gain Wisdom and Good Sense

Proverbs 19:8
8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good. (KJV)

Devotional:
Growing up I always associated grey hair with wisdom. However, as I’ve gotten older, I realize now that grey hair does not mean a person has wisdom, as there are many grey-haired people making poor decisions. I would like to share this same scripture from the Amplified Version: it reads, “He who gains wisdom and good sense loves (preserves) his own soul; He who keeps understanding will find good and prosper.” I like the Amplified Version as it makes it a little plainer for us common folk.

The first part says, “he who gains wisdom”. What does it mean to gain? To gain means to increase the amount or rate of something. Now, let’s define wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to use knowledge, experience, and understanding; to make good decisions and judgments, and to act productively. Then it goes on to read, “and good sense.” Let’s define good sense. Good sense means having the ability to make the right decision about something, often in moral situations. Now, let’s put our new words together. It reads like this, if we increase the amount of knowledge, experience, and understanding we have in a thing, we will have the ability to make the right decisions, make good judgements and act productively.

Then the second part of this scripture talks about us keeping understanding and finding good. Let’s define understanding. Understanding is having the ability to comprehend what you know. Finding good helps us improve our overall well-being and outlook on life. Some may call it happiness and prosperity. It’s not good enough for us to learn about the things of God, and not apply what we’ve learned to our lives. When we have wisdom (what you know to be true) about God, our souls will be preserved.
