Eat Drink and Be Merry

Proverbs 17:22 
22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

Devotional:
If I told you being happy could have a positive effect on your health, would you believe me? If you believe the Bible, then you’ll say yes. Let’s just say, you don’t believe the Bible, but you believe the doctor. Well, the doctors say the same thing. Here is what many of them agree upon as it relates to being happy. Happiness can have a positive effect on our health by producing a high self-esteem, lowering the risk  of cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, better sleep, improved diet, and motivates you to take care of your body. Sounds like medicine to me. If that is the case, why aren’t doctors writing more prescriptions for happiness?

Happiness is a choice. Something I had to learn through the many trials and tribulations I’ve had in my life. Like many of you. When was the last time you were at your happiest? Was it after visiting friends, spending time with family, completing a task or enjoying a hobby? Many things can bring happiness as happiness is contingent on the outcome of an experience. When the experience goes well, it produces happiness. That warm fuzzy feeling.

However, in the absence of happiness, there lies a broken spirit which dries up our bones. In contrast to a merry heart, a broken spirit leads to low self-esteem, sadness, bitterness, hate, and death. Unmet expectations often lead to a broken spirit which affects the way we live and take care of ourselves. Let’s try a little happiness for our medicine, that’s what our Doctor, Jesus prescribed.

As you go throughout day 14 of your Daniel fast find what it was that made you happy before life happened. Spend time with nature, read more fun books or watch a cartoon. Life is heavy on its own, let’s find ways to lighten the load and take the stress off our bones.  Eat, drink and be merry. 5020202020Recent
