“Do Not Despise Small Beginnings”
Scripture: Zechariah 4:10

"For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth."

Devotion:
As the Israelites worked to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem after returning from exile, God spoke through the prophet Zechariah to encourage them to remain faithful and trust in His power. Some people became discouraged because the new foundation looked small and unimpressive compared to Solomon’s former temple. God reminded His people, as noted in this verse, that they should not despise the day of small things. What may appear unimportant in the eyes of humanity can become something extraordinary when placed in the Master’s hands.

This Scripture encourages us today not to become discouraged by humble beginnings, slow progress, or circumstances that may seem minute, but to trust in God's divine purpose and perfect timing. We should also be reminded not to compare our journey with others, instead we should trust in the Lord’s plan for our lives.

Zerubbabel, who was responsible for overseeing the rebuilding of the temple, faced opposition and challenges. However, God assured him that the work would be completed. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord.” (Zechariah 4:6)  We must also remember that spiritual growth, ministry, and the fulfillment of God's purpose often begins with small steps of faith and obedience. God notices and rejoices over our acts of kindness no matter how insignificant those acts may seem to us. God does not measure our worth by outward appearances or worldly accomplishments. No, He calls us to live faithfully and obediently according to His Word, seeking to honor Him in all that we do.

Remember, what seems small today may be part of something much greater in God's divine plan. Do not allow discouragement to cause you to abandon the work He has called you to do. Continue praying, serving, giving, and walking in obedience to Him. Trust that the same God who began the work is faithful to accomplish it.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for reminding me that every beginning has value when it is guided by Your purpose. Forgive me for the times I have overlooked small opportunities or became discouraged when progress seemed slow. Help me to remain faithful and obedient in everything You call me to do. May every seed of faith, act of kindness, and work of service bring glory and honor to Your holy name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
