“Anchored in Hope”
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
 
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”

Devotion:
Paul gave believers a message of hope, encouragement, and assurance concerning the return of Jesus Christ. It is a reminder for us today that the Lord Himself will descend from heaven, the dead in Christ will rise first, and those who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air.

This Scripture, which is often read during Home Going Services, lets the believers know that death is not the finale for those who belong to Christ. Because Jesus died and rose again, we have the assurance that those who have fallen asleep in Christ will rise again. The resurrection gives us hope beyond the grave and confidence that our separation from loved ones who died in the Lord is not forever.

Paul tells the church to “comfort one another with these words.” This reminder about the future is a message intended to strengthen us today. When grief comes, and it will, we have hope. When life is “life-ing,” we have hope. When we cannot clearly understand the things of tomorrow, yes, we have hope in Jesus.

Let’s live with expectancy and remain faithful until His return. Don’t get distracted by the cares of this world, keep your heart prepared, stand strong, and stay focused on Christ. Take every opportunity you are given, starting today, to encourage one another in the Lord while we await “the great gettin up mornin” that is often sung about.

Prayer:
Father, we thank You for the hope we have through Jesus Christ. We thank You that death is not the end for us who believe in You. Give us strength when we experience grief, loss, or difficult circumstances and give us words of comfort to encourage those who are hurting. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
