"Not My Will"
Scripture: St. Matthew 26:39

“O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”

Devotion:
In Gethsemane, we see the deepest expression of submission. Jesus does not deny His feelings—He brings them before the Father. “If it be possible…” reveals His humanity. “Nevertheless…” reveals His obedience.

Submission to the will of God does not mean the absence of struggle. It means surrendering the final say.

Lent invites us into Gethsemane moments—places where our desires collide with God’s design. We may prefer comfort, but His counsel calls for growth. We may prefer ease, but His will leads to purpose.

To be submitted to the will and counsel of God means:

• Trusting His wisdom over our understanding.
• Choosing obedience over preference.
• Yielding our timing to His sovereignty.

Jesus understood that the cup was heavy, but the Father’s will was higher. Because He submitted in the garden, redemption flowed from the cross.

Spiritual maturity is measured not by how loudly we worship, but by how deeply we surrender.

And here is the comfort: we do not submit alone.

Today, lay your will on the altar. Say “nevertheless.” And watch God turn surrender into fruit.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,

I bring my will before You.
Where my desires conflict with Your design, teach me to say “nevertheless.”
Align my heart with Your counsel.
Strengthen me to trust You fully and obey You completely.

Through Christ who strengthens me,
I choose Your will over mine.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
